What travel cath lab contracts pay, measured from 156 open postings across 41 states: a $2,908 median, about 25 percent above adult ICU and higher than ICU in all eleven states compared directly. RCIS eligibility for nurses, and the call and role questions to settle before you sign.

Travel cath lab contracts pay a median of $2,908 a week, middle half $2,656 to $3,119, across 156 open postings in 41 states. That is the highest median of the twenty-four nursing specialties we measure, about 25 percent above adult ICU, and the premium is consistent: cath lab pays more than ICU in all eleven states where both have at least five open contracts, by about 32 percent typically.

These are advertised weekly totals before tax, usually including tax-free housing and meal stipends; for almost all postings the figure is the top of an advertised range. They are not take-home pay. Interventional radiology nursing is counted with the cath lab, because the two shop the same contracts. Current figures by state are on the travel cath lab pay page.

Why does the cath lab pay the most?

We can show the premium and not its cause. It is large, about 25 percent over adult ICU nationally and 32 percent within the same state, and it is not one market: California holds 14 of the 156 postings, and the median outside it is $2,873, barely lower. The explanation usually given, which we find persuasive and cannot verify, is the same one given for the operating room: a procedure room that cannot run for want of one trained nurse is revenue a hospital does not get back, and the skills are procedural enough that a facility cannot teach them inside a thirteen-week contract.

What certification do travel cath lab jobs require?

RCIS, Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist, issued by Cardiovascular Credentialing International, is the invasive cardiovascular credential, and nurses are eligible for it. One of CCI's qualification routes is a certificate or degree program in a health science, nursing included, plus one year of full-time work experience in invasive cardiovascular technology and 600 cardiac diagnostic or interventional procedures across your career experience or formal education. The 600 procedures are the part to start counting early.

Many cath lab nurses come from critical care and hold CCRN as well; the ICU guide covers its hour rule. ACLS and BLS are the cards to keep current. We cannot say how often requisitions name RCIS or CCRN, because one of the two feeds behind our figures does not populate a certifications field.

How much cath lab experience do you need before traveling?

One to two years of recent cath lab experience is the practical floor. That is agency and facility practice, not a published rule, and critical care experience alone is usually not a substitute, because the work is procedural. What gets checked is which roles you can fill: circulating, monitoring and recording, or scrubbing, and which procedures you have done in each, from diagnostic catheterizations to interventions, electrophysiology and structural cases.

On your skills checklist, list the roles and the case types separately, with rough volumes. A lab that needs someone who can scrub will ask, and a traveler who can fill all three roles is easier to place.

What should you check in a cath lab contract specifically?

Call. Many cath labs run an on-call rotation for emergency cases. If the contract includes call, get the call rate, the callback rate and the expected frequency in writing, as three separate numbers.

Which roles and which cases. Ask whether you will scrub, circulate, monitor or rotate, and whether the lab does electrophysiology, structural heart or peripheral work. A contract titled cath lab can mean any mix of them.

Guaranteed hours. Procedure schedules can be cancelled in a slow week. Read how a cancelled case day is counted against your guarantee, which the offer and the contract covers.

Bottom Line

Travel cath lab nursing pays a $2,908 median across 156 open contracts, the highest of twenty-four specialties, about 25 percent above adult ICU nationally and higher than ICU in every state where the two can be compared. RCIS from CCI is open to nurses with a year of full-time invasive cardiovascular work and 600 procedures. Before you sign, settle call, the roles you will fill and how cancelled cases count against your guaranteed hours.
