Travel L&D Nurse Pay in 2026: $2,560 Median, and the Widest State Spread We Measure

What travel labor and delivery contracts pay, measured from 333 open postings across 45 states: a $2,560 median, and state medians from $2,019 to $3,093, the widest geographic spread of any nursing specialty. The RNC-OB rule that is not either-or.

Travel labor and delivery contracts pay a median of $2,560 a week, middle half $2,309 to $2,913, across 333 open postings in 45 states. It ranks fifth of the twenty-three nursing specialties we measure.

It is also the specialty where location matters most. Of every specialty we track, labor and delivery has the widest spread between states: median pay runs from $2,019 to $3,093 across the states with enough contracts to quote, a 53 percent range inside a single specialty, against about 50 percent across all twenty-three specialties. Where you take an L&D contract moves your pay more than changing specialty would.

Current figures by state are on the travel L&D pay page, which is worth reading before you pick a market.

Why is the state spread so wide in labor and delivery?

We can measure the spread but not its cause, so what follows is reasoning rather than a finding.

The explanation we would have reached for does not survive contact with our own method. Obstetric services have closed in large numbers, particularly in rural areas: the Government Accountability Office found the number of rural hospitals providing them declined from 2004 through 2018, and that more than half of rural counties had none by 2018. But closures remove postings from a market, and our comparison only includes states with at least ten open contracts, so the markets that story is about tend to be excluded rather than counted.

The endpoints do not fit it either. The extremes are Ohio and California, neither of which is a closure-concentrated rural state, and the simpler explanation is one this site already publishes elsewhere: GSA per diem ceilings are higher in expensive metros, so a larger share of a California package can be paid as a tax-free stipend. We are not claiming that is the cause either. We can measure the spread and we cannot measure why it exists.

Either way the practical advice does not depend on the cause: check the state table before committing to a market, because in this specialty the difference is larger than in any other.

What certification do travel labor and delivery jobs require?

RNC-OB, the Inpatient Obstetric Nursing credential, issued by the National Certification Corporation. Its eligibility rule has a shape worth noticing.

NCC requires current, active, unencumbered RN licensure in the US or Canada, plus 24 months of specialty experience comprising a minimum of 2,000 hours, plus employment in the specialty at some point in the last 24 months. The 24 months and the 2,000 hours are both required: NCC states explicitly that this is not an either-or criterion, which is the detail most summaries drop. Specialty experience can include direct patient care, education, administration or research.

Two course completions are worth holding and are faster to obtain than RNC-OB: NRP, the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, whose card is a course completion rather than a certification, and advanced fetal monitoring. We cannot say how often requisitions demand them, because one of the two feeds behind our figures does not populate a certifications field. Neither is a certification in the RNC-OB sense, and both have their own expiry dates that belong in your credentialing file.

How much labor and delivery experience do you need before traveling?

Two years of recent full-time L&D experience is the practical floor, and it is a harder floor than most specialties enforce. No board publishes it, so this is agency and facility practice rather than a rule, but the reason is unusually concrete: obstetric emergencies are low-frequency and high-consequence, and a unit cannot supervise a traveler through the first shoulder dystocia or postpartum hemorrhage they have managed alone.

What gets checked beyond the years is whether you can read a strip independently. Advanced fetal monitoring is the competency the interview probes, more than any procedure, and it is the one that decides whether you are counted as a resource on the unit or as someone who needs one. If your fetal monitoring card has lapsed, renew it before you are submitted rather than after an offer, because it sits in the credentialing window where a missing document moves a start date.

Circulating experience is the other differentiator. A nurse who can circulate a cesarean is submittable for a materially larger share of contracts than one who cannot, because it removes the staffing constraint the unit is usually trying to solve. Say so explicitly on your skills checklist if you have it, and do not overstate it if you do not: it is discovered immediately.

What should you check in a labor and delivery contract specifically?

What the unit covers. Labor and delivery, postpartum, and mother-baby are distinct assignments that share a floor and sometimes a contract title. We track mother-baby separately for that reason, and its median is materially lower. Ask which you are being hired for and whether you are expected to cover the others.

Whether you circulate for cesareans. This is a scrub-role expectation inside a contract most people read as bedside, and it is common enough to ask about directly.

Delivery volume and level. A unit doing 200 deliveries a year and one doing 4,000 are different jobs, and the presence of a level III nursery changes what you are expected to manage before the neonatal team arrives.

Bottom Line

L&D travel pays a $2,560 median, fifth of twenty-three specialties, but the ranking is the less useful number. This is the specialty with the widest geographic spread we measured, $2,019 to $3,093 between states, so the market you choose moves your pay more than the specialty does. RNC-OB requires 24 months and 2,000 hours, both, and NRP plus fetal monitoring are the faster additions. Settle what the unit covers before signing.
