Travel Social Worker Salary in 2026: Pay, LCSW and LICSW Requirements, and Hospital Contracts

What travel social workers make in 2026: BLS pay data, what emergency department and case management contracts post and involve, the clinical license they require, Washington's LICSW rules and reciprocity program, the Social Work Licensure Compact status, and how to compare offers.

A hospital emergency department cannot discharge a patient who arrived in crisis until a licensed clinician has assessed the risk and found somewhere safe for them to go. An inpatient floor cannot discharge a patient with nowhere to go at all. Both of those jobs belong to the hospital social worker, and when a department is short one, the beds behind it stop moving. That is why hospital social work has become a travel contract in its own right. In September 2026 the CircleRN board carries 5 social work openings, all in Washington, at weekly totals of about $2,278 to $2,483 for 40-hour, 13-week assignments.

This guide covers what travel social workers make in 2026, where the contracts are and what they involve, the clinical license that decides who is eligible, Washington's LICSW rules and reciprocity program, how much experience facilities want, and how to compare offers when the package is large and the licensing lead time is the real constraint.

How much do travel social workers make in 2026?

Start with the staff wage. By the Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 data, social workers overall earned a national median of $61,780 a year, and the number depends heavily on the setting: healthcare social workers, the group that staffs hospitals, earned a median of $67,880, about $32.63 an hour, while mental health and substance abuse social workers earned $60,280. Across all social workers the lowest 10 percent earned under $42,790 and the highest 10 percent more than $100,090, and about 816,100 social workers were employed in 2025.

Travel contracts are quoted per week and combine a taxable hourly base with tax-free housing and meal stipends. The social work contracts on our board in September 2026 post weekly totals of about $2,483 for emergency department clinical social work in Spokane and about $2,278 for inpatient case management in Everett, both 40-hour weeks over 13 weeks. On a 40-hour week that is a blended $57 to $62 an hour, well above the staff median, and a large share of it arrives untaxed. Where are travel social work jobs in 2026?

Right now, Washington, in two hospitals that are both Level II trauma centers. In Spokane, a teaching hospital that is also a Level II pediatric trauma center has four openings for licensed clinical social workers in its adult and pediatric emergency department, split between day shifts running 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and evening shifts running 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., with every other weekend required and the possibility of floating to a sister hospital when the department is overstaffed. In Everett, a two-campus trauma center has one opening for an MSW-level case manager working five 8-hour day shifts across both campuses, which sit about two miles apart, with every other weekend required and 72 guaranteed hours per two-week pay period.

Both are the kind of facility where social work vacancies turn into contracts quickly: large, high-acuity, and dependent on behavioral health and discharge capacity to keep beds turning. The count changes weekly, so treat five as a snapshot and check the board for what is open today, and see Washington hospitals hiring travelers and hospitals in Spokane for the wider picture.

What does a travel social worker do on a hospital contract?

Hospital social work contracts come in two shapes, and the postings on our board show one of each. The first is emergency department behavioral health: conducting crisis risk assessments for adults and children, safety planning, and arranging disposition, whether that is an inpatient psychiatric bed, a crisis service, or a safe discharge with follow-up. The Spokane contracts require experience conducting crisis risk assessments for both adults and pediatrics, and the evening shift runs until 2 a.m.

The second is inpatient case management and discharge planning: coordinating care for medical patients whose discharge is complicated by placement, insurance authorization, home health, or a long length of stay. The Everett contract requires acute care experience with discharge planning and care coordination, and prefers a candidate who has done it across med-surg, long-length-of-stay, and emergency department patients. On both kinds of contract the traveler is expected to chart in Epic and to work the unit's schedule, weekends included.

What license do you need to be a travel social worker?

A full clinical license. In most states that is the LCSW, Licensed Clinical Social Worker; a few states use another name, and Washington calls it the LICSW, Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. The Spokane postings say it plainly: "Must have full licensure. An associate license will not suffice." They also accept a Licensed Mental Health Counselor or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in place of the LICSW, which tells you what the contract is really for: an independently licensed behavioral health clinician who can assess risk without supervision. If you hold an LMHC or LMFT, or your state's equivalent counselor license, and have emergency department crisis experience, these contracts are open to you too.

Case management contracts sit one tier lower. The Everett contract requires an MSW and a Washington license, and lists LCSW and LMSW as acceptable, so a Licensed Advanced Social Worker (LASW) or an independent clinical license both qualify. Some contracts also require BLS. In Washington, the Department of Health requires the LICSW applicant to hold a master's degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, complete at least 3,000 hours of postgraduate supervised experience over at least two years, including 1,000 hours of direct client contact and 100 hours of direct supervision, and pass the ASWB Clinical exam. The LASW requires the same degree and 3,000 hours, with 800 hours of direct client contact, 90 hours of supervision, and the ASWB Advanced Generalist exam.

If you are already licensed in another state, Washington's reciprocity program issues a temporary probationary license to a social worker licensed in a state the department has found substantially equivalent, good for one year and renewable once, and an applicant fully licensed in good standing for more than five years does not have to document supervision hours at all. Start it before you have an offer: the Everett posting states that a pending Washington license is not accepted, and licensing is the step most likely to push a start date. The Social Work Licensure Compact has now been enacted in 35 states including Washington, but as of mid-2026 no multistate licenses have been issued and the compact's data system is not expected until spring 2027, so for now every state is a separate application.

Do travel social workers get tax-free stipends?

Yes, on the same IRS rules as travel nurses and every other travel clinician. If you work a temporary assignment away from a tax home you genuinely maintain, your agency can pay housing and meal stipends tax-free up to the GSA per diem cap for the location. For fiscal year 2026 the standard rate is $110 a day for lodging and $68 for meals and incidentals; Spokane's rate is $126 for lodging with $86 for meals, and Everett's, set with Lynnwood for Snohomish County, runs $113 to $140 depending on season with $86 for meals. On a social work package a large share of the weekly total, often more than half, is stipend, which is why the tax home rule is not a formality here. The Everett contract does not accept local candidates. The full explanation is in do allied health travelers get tax-free stipends and travel nurse tax home rules.

How much experience do you need, and do first-time travelers qualify?

It depends on the shape of the contract. The Spokane emergency department contracts ask for three years, prefer hospital experience, and require crisis risk assessment experience with both adults and children. The Everett case management contract asks for one year, requires acute care discharge planning experience, and accepts first-time travelers. That split is the general rule: emergency department behavioral health wants seasoned clinicians who can make a disposition decision at 1 a.m. without backup, while inpatient case management is the more common first contract for a social worker with a year or two of hospital work.

Either way, the facility is screening for setting, not years. A social worker with three years in outpatient therapy will not match an emergency department contract; one with a year of hospital discharge planning will. Build your skills checklist around the settings and populations you have actually worked with, name the charting system, and be specific about crisis assessment tools if you have used them.

Is travel social work worth it in 2026?

For a clinically licensed social worker who can maintain a tax home, the math is unusually good. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of social workers to grow 6 percent from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all occupations, with about 69,100 openings a year, and hospital behavioral health and discharge capacity are where that demand is most acute. Against a healthcare social worker staff median of about $67,880 a year, roughly $1,305 a week in gross wages, a $2,300 to $2,500 weekly package with a large untaxed share is a substantial premium, closer to a travel nurse's package than to the other allied disciplines.

The constraints are licensing and market size. A state license by endorsement or reciprocity takes weeks to months, the compact is not yet issuing multistate licenses, and a handful of contracts open at a time in a handful of health systems. Every-other-weekend requirements and evening shifts are standard on the emergency department contracts. If you can carry two or three state licenses and move on short notice, the premium is dependable; if you can only work one metro, the market may not have a contract when you want one. Read travel allied health jobs for how the smaller allied markets behave and how to get started in travel healthcare for the steps in order.

How do you find housing and compare travel social work offers?

For housing, take the stipend and find your own furnished short-term rental, keeping whatever you do not spend, or accept agency-arranged housing. On a social work package the stipend clears local rent in both Spokane and Everett with room to spare, so most travelers take it. See how to find travel housing for the method and the scams to avoid, and browse furnished rentals from verified hosts in Spokane and Everett, or the full list of travel housing in Washington.

To compare offers, look at after-tax take-home rather than the headline weekly number, and get the taxable base and the housing and M&IE stipends listed separately. Then pin down the terms that vary most on social work contracts: guaranteed hours and how many shifts can be called off per pay period, the weekend requirement, whether you float and to which campus or hospital, the shift window on evening contracts, and who pays for the state license and the ASWB verification. Run the numbers with the pay calculator, read hospital reviews, and check contract red flags before you sign. On CircleRN you apply from the posting and a recruiter walks through the package with you on a short intro call before anything is submitted.

Bottom Line

Travel social workers build on a healthcare social worker staff median of about $67,880 a year (BLS, May 2025). The contracts on our board in September 2026 post about $2,278 to $2,483 a week for 40-hour, 13-week assignments at two Washington trauma centers, one in emergency department crisis work and one in inpatient case management, and a large share of that total is tax-free stipend. A full clinical license (LCSW, or LICSW in Washington) opens the emergency department contracts, which also accept LMHC and LMFT clinicians; an MSW-level license opens case management. Washington's reciprocity program and its five-year supervision waiver make the license reachable, the compact is not yet issuing multistate licenses, and the traveler who wins is the one who applies for the state license before the offer.

CircleRN gives social workers the same tools as nurses: open social work contracts, verified pay data, a pay calculator, furnished housing in Washington from verified hosts, and hospital reviews.
